PHOTO SHOOT TIPS
How to Prepare
Choose neutral colors and darker tones for at least one outfit.
Solid fabrics and longer sleeves always work best. Layer textures and accessories truly make an image POP! When in doubt, bring options for us to choose from.
Keep your hair and makeup natural. Don't try a new haircut. Self-tanner. Extra makeup... this is not the day to do this!
Your BEST looking portrait are YOU, honest and authentic.
Men fresh shave. Check the nose and ear hair... yes I said that :)
Arrive rested and ready, and pack all your accessories and undergarments needed for each outfit.
Check your nails. Dry hands and chipped nails don't photograph well.
HEADSHOT TIPS to help you plan
- Dress how you want to present yourself best, what makes you feel confident!
- Select clothes that are not baggy or too tight but fit well. What works best are fitted or tailored clothing.
- Clothes must be on hangers, ironed or steamed, with no wrinkles. Wrinkles are costly to edit out.
- Long sleeves often work best over sleeveless unless you love your arms—sleeveless shirts limit poses.
- Avoid wearing white unless it's layered under a jacket, cardigan, vest, or sweater.
- Patterns are distracting and pull the eye away from you. If you do wear a pattern, consider layering with a solid color jacket, sweater, or vest.
- The right color will bring out your eye color and brighten your look.
- If your hair is dark, consider wearing a solid color on top so it does not blend into the dark clothing.
- To ensure your session is a hit, bring options/alternative shirts so we can select what will work best for you.
- If you wear a necklace and earrings, ensure they work with what you plan to wear and won't be too long or lay incorrectly. Shorter works best for headshots as long ones will be cut off.
- Bring chapstick or lip balm to keep lips hydrated. You don't want your lips to look dry in your portrait.
- Please don't get a new haircut or color the day before. I have seen this backfire, and you are investing in this session. The day before your session is not the day to try a new look.
- Self-tanner should be applied days before, NEVER the day before. It is another costly move that will backfire.
CONSIDERING PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP AND OR HAIR?
We highly recommend professional makeup for women and have a list of talented makeup and hair artists who can be booked for your session. Rates start at $250-$300, depending on your desired look and hair length.
Bring lipstick or chapstick for touch-ups if you choose to do your own.
Your hair should be done how you want it, and you usually wear it. Again, it's not a day to try a new style. Wear your hair your way!
